I'm sure you've heard of the famous word "detox". Well, that's not what I'm talking about. First of all, your body is able to detoxify itself, fortunately. “Detox” has become the commercial and sophisticated name for one-off measures to simply… eat healthy. No matter how they use it, it's always about it. And let me tell you, eating healthy shouldn't be a one-time experience to be cool and tell your friends it should be a part of your lifestyle.
After making this important clarification, let's get back to the main topic.
WHAT IS A LIQUID DAY?
Exactly what you think: you only consume food in liquid form for a day.
All you need is:
1- A powerful blender to make smoothies
I personally use Nutribullet, they made a lot of new models, but I still use the original (which is the cheapest). There are plenty of other brands out there that I'm sure will be good too.
2- A rich range of authentic ingredients
Fresh vegetables like leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes
Herbs and spices
Oats / rice / coconut milk
These are all extremely nutritious ingredients and, as you may have noticed, they will also make your day completely vegan. Given the variety of fruits and vegetables available to us, there are plenty of possibilities when it comes to combining ingredients. A model to use as a reference is as follows (but you can of course adjust the proportions between fruits and vegetables):
1/2 cup leafy greens (eg spinach, kale, cabbage)
1/4 cup fruit
1/4 vegetarian milk of your choice or water (there should always be enough liquid)
LIQUID MEAL PLAN
Breakfast - Smoothie composed of oatmeal, cocoa powder, almonds, flax seeds, honey, oat milk.
Mid-morning snack - Smoothie made from spinach, kiwi, apples, chia seeds, bananas, oat milk.
Breakfast - Soup made from boiled red lentils, carrots, turmeric, pepper, salt, coconut milk.
Mid-afternoon snack - Smoothie made with strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, ginger, mixed nuts, coconut water.
Having dinner - Soup composed of tomatoes, basil, salt, pepper, boiled cannellini beans, coconut milk.
Apart from the beans, you need to mix all the ingredients in their raw form, and for soups, you can warm them slightly in a saucepan after mixing (but not boiling). You can of course have more than 5 meal and drink if you are hungry. It is not a weight loss strategy, although you can use it occasionally as part of a weight loss program. You are not supposed to be hungry! And also drink plenty of water and herbal tea.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A LIQUID DAY?
A little break for your digestive system.
Because you mix your food before you eat it, you are essentially doing half the work of your digestive system! This means that your stomach and gut will have a lot less work to do than usual. If you tend to experience digestive issues, such as bloating and constipation, a liquid day will be especially beneficial for you.
A huge increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Your fruits and vegetables are condensed in liquid form and that means you will be consuming an amount that you will never eat in regular form, especially leafy greens. Mixing vegetables with fruits also makes them more palatable if you are not generally a fan of vegetables.
An absorption of all the good nutrients from the seeds.
By mixing the seeds together instead of eating them whole, you extract all of the best nutrients they contain, like the omega 3s from flax seeds.
ARE THERE ANY CONS?
You will definitely run out of crunch! It's quite a change from solid food. And, despite the fact that you are consuming a lot of nutrients, you may feel a little weaker than usual. Therefore, avoid strenuous exercise while you have a fluid day, and stick to one day, do not do more than one fluid day in a row. If you suffer from particular illnesses, always consult your doctor before having a liquid day.
